Christmas haul (2016)

I got SO MANY books for Christmas, I’m so thankful ❤ I had a great holiday, saw my family, played cards and eat too much wonderful food. I also had to study because I had one last exam on the 4th of January, that was less fun but had to be done.

The great haul

Non-bookish items:

The Blu-ray boxset of Star Trek – The Original Series
Last year I watched the entirety of Star Trek (TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT + movies) and fell in love with this franchise. I’m fully prepared for the new show (DISCOVERY) coming in 2017! I’m SO ready to rewatch everything with this awesome boxset my boyfriend got me!

Harry Potter socks
From one of my best friends! I really wasn’t expecting to get anything since we live kinda far away, but it seems she thought of me when she saw them (and I already wore them all since Christmas)!

Space-Gun Keyring
When you press the trigger, there’s a “pew pew” sound and red light! From my sister 🙂

The books: (from the top)

1) Je m’habillerai de nuit (Discworld #38), by Terry Pratchett, Patrick Couton (Translator)
2) La Couronne du Berger (Discworld #41), by Terry Pratchett, Patrick Couton (Translator)
I usually prefer to read books in the language they were written if I can. But I started reading Terry Pratchett’s books when I was in high-school and it was too difficult so I turned to the french translation which is really well done. So now I keep reading them that way! Those two are the last of the series centered on Tiffany Aching/Tiphaine Patraque which I love and I can’t wait to read them. I heard La couronne du berger/The Shepherd’s Crown was not as good as the others since it is the last book of Terry Pratchett, but I’m still eager to read it.

3) The Aeronaut’s Windlass (The Cinder Spires #1), by Jim Butcher
a new series set in a fantastic world of noble families, steam-powered technology, and magic-wielding warriors…“. Steampunk and magic? I’m in. Also the fact that this is an author that Patrick Rothfuss admires is a plus!

4) Lagoon, by Nnedi Okorafor
After reading Binti and Akata Witch I’ve decided I needed to read everything Nnedi Okorafor wrote! And this cover is absolutely gorgeous.

5) The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories, by Ken Liu
Ever since I started reading short stories on the tor.com website and got approved to receive their novellas, I’ve learned to love short fiction! This will be my first time reading anything by Ken Liu, if I love this I’m hoping to read The Grace of Kings next (hopefully this year).

6) Shadows of Self (Mistborn #5 – Alloy Era #2), by Brandon Sanderson
Not technically a christmas present since I pre-ordered it for myself, but since I then sent it to a friend in Paris who got it signed by the author for me, and then sent it back all nicely giftwrapped: I count it as a present!
The Mistborn series is the one that made me a big Sanderson fan. I love that he explores different time period with the same magic system!

7) Not Your Sidekick (Not Your Sidekick #1), by C.B. Lee
First novel read in 2017! I loved it immensely, here’s my review!

8) After Atlas (Planetfall), by Emma Newman
I read and loved Planetfall last year, so I was super excited when I saw there was going to have a companion book! Apparently this one is a science fiction mystery.

9) Updraft (Bone Universe #1), by Fran Wilde
I heard a lot of amazing things about this book on twitter last year, with the redesign of the cover I could not not want to read and own it!

10) Source des tempêtes (Le Livre de l’Enigme #1), by Nathalie Dau
French fantasy! Heard nothing but amazing reviews for this one, it was even a favourite at a small French bookstore I love.

11) Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Original Screenplay, by J.K. Rowling
Already reviewed that one! Fun fact: Two people gifted this one to me!

12) The Starlit Wood: New Fairy Tales, edited by Dominik Parisien and Navah Wolfe
There are so many authors I love in this anthology! I cannot wait to read it, it’s also a beautiful object!

13) On the Edge of Gone, by Corinne Duyvis
Already finished that one too! Really loved it, writing my review.

14) Angel Catbird, Vol. 1 (Angel Catbird #1), by Margaret Atwood and Johnnie Christmas
I also read that one, since it was really short (around 80 pages). But I was really disappointed. I talked about it on my December Wrap-Up!

15) Culottées (Les Culottées #1), by Pénélope Bagieu
Last but not least, another that I reviewed! I loved this immensely and am waiting eagerly for the second volume. I also talked about this one on my December Wrap-Up!

So that’s an amazing stack of greatness! I really wasn’t expecting that much!
I will try to not buy any more books before finishing all of those, but that will be hard. Especially with the second volume of Culottées coming at the end of January and the next Mistborn book that is already out!

I hope everyone had a great holiday! (And yes I know it’s almost the end of January but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

    1. I’m only finishing the Tiffany Aching series! I haven’t read that many discworld books yet… but I started collecting them in the beautiful L’Atalante edition, the white ones ❤ and the translation is really well done. But I understand the blasphemy idea x') I have four books of his in English, and I'm sure I'll end up rereading everything in English one of these days 🙂

      1. Oh, you didn’t read the whole Discworld serie in order but instead you read some of the “mini-series”, is that it? Alright then, I understand. I should mention that I also started to read these books in french but after a while, I started again and this time in english (it’s not like the monty pythons with all the word plays but I’ve always felt that the british humour is difficult to manage in other languages – even in american english).

        1. That’s it! I only read a few, but trying to not read everything too fast, because.. you know 😦
I only read Reaper Man and one or two others of the Death mini-serie, then the three first on the Tiphanny Aching serie, Nation, Good Omens, and I own like 20 of his books!
I understand! But I really think the translation is amazingly well done on those bookd 🙂 no fear, I’ll definitely read a lot of his books in english nevertheless!
