The City of Spires trilogy is a multi-layered political fantasy led by an all LGBTQIAP+ cast. Fans of complex storylines criss-crossing one another, elves and magic, and strong friendships and found families will find everything they need within these pages. (author’s website)
I had the opportunity to read an advance copy of City of Betrayal, sequel to City of Strife, and since it isn’t out until October 22nd (TWO MONTHS!) and I can’t stop thinking about it, I thought I should still try and make a little something to share my excitement!
I had started a thread on twitter of character’s aesthetic/mood board (here) and I thought I should try to add a few characters (not ALL of them, because there’s a lot and sometimes those pictures are quite hard to find let me tell you) and to put it all in one place, easier to link to! Of course, a review of City of Betrayal will be posted laster, closer to release date!
Nevian Ollu
Such a sweet boy, I grew to love him even more in this sequel!
Isra Alor
Careless but caring, she loves girls but has to hide it. Like all the other characters, there’s a lot more to her than we might first think and I loved that we got to know her more.
We learn more about her identity in CoB…
Jilssan Wich
She’s Isra’s mentor, a bi woman always ready to help people close to her while trying to keep a cold mask.
Hasryan Fel’ethier
This guy managed to become one of my new favourite assassin, I loved him the most in this book!
Lord Arathiel Brasten
“Arathiel is a warm blanket: simple, reliable, soft. He’s the friend you kind of forget, but when it really matters he’s there. Leaping of bridges to save your neck from the noose, even though you expect nothing of him.”
Arathiel and Hasryan
The bond they ended up sharing was so important to me that I had to make a board for the two of them too!
Lady Camilla Dathirii
A character who would have a lot of stories to tell (some details given of her past in this book are to die for, and the author said she was considering writing about it someday!! *excited*)
She is so nice and trusting and strong, I’d love to have tea with her!
Lord Diel Dathirii
Just wants to be happy with his boyfriend and for everyone to be nice to each other, has to save his city and rescue people instead.
Lady Branwen Dathirii
A lady, a spy, lover of nice dresses and costumes. Branwen is a great character and she will do anything for her family and allies.
Cal Masset
He can’t help but be friend with everyone, he’s the character you also can’t help to love. Plus his aromanticism is stated on the page🙌
Inspector Sora Sharpe
I love her, she’s in a position to do bad things but always chooses to do the good. She sees the good in people, which is not so helpful in her line of work. A cunning trans woman not afraid to speak her mind.
High Priest Varden Daramond
A tortured soul with a dark past but such a kind man. Also loves to draw (mostly naked men let’s be honest.)
Avenazar
Leader of the Myrian Enclave, the bad guy of the story, awful man, 0/10 would not recommend to cross path with him.
There are SO MANY more characters who deserve this treatment but I didn’t want this to be too long, or sometimes it was just too difficult to find relevant pictures so you’ll just have to go read those GREAT books and join me in loving those characters ❤ (except the last one of course)
Do you like book aesthetics?
I first came across them on twitter. I find they often make me want to check out the book in question. It’s very hard for me to do one for just one book, I always end up thinking of the characters. That’s why I liked the idea of doing several for one book, one per character!
Can I like this hundred times? This is like one of my favourite series. I love your aesthetics. Cal’s is totally on point. I love Diel’s and hate-love Avenazar’s!
Do you mind if I ask who your favourite character is?

Haaaaa thank you I’m so glad :’)
Same here!! I’m so excited for the cover reveal of CoB!
Omg that question 😂😂 I think my favourite character in CoS was Branwen and in CoB it’s Hasryan! But I also looooved Nevian and Camilla, and I feel that Sora has the potential to become a favourite too when we’ll see more of her!! Let’s be honest, this whole cast is amazing!
What about you??

Branwen in CoS and Isra grew on me in CoB.
But like how can you choose! Nevian is so precious! Jilssan tries her best! Cal is just so bloody adorable and cute and bubbly! Varden is wonderful!
I wish more people knew of this book!!!!
I love how each of the characters is so nuanced, and so real! I think my favourite character also depends on my mood!

Yes!! In CoS I felt a bit cold regarding Isra and how careless she seemed, but I loved how CoB gave a lot more depth to a lot of characters, her included!
Yes yes yes!💛

I was so irritated with her. But she’s young. She internalised so much. She’s scared. Let’s see how it continues.
